A gourd-shaped zhurenbei, or host’s cup, has a broad, gently flared rim above a narrowed waist. This comfortable contour gives the fingers a natural resting point and makes the blue-to-white glaze easy to appreciate while drinking.
The gourd profile comes from a long Chinese tradition of adapting familiar natural forms for ceramic vessels, while zhurenbei simply means a cup for the person hosting the tea. In gongfu practice, each guest commonly receives a separate cup for tasting.
This piece is made in China from glazed ceramic, with deep cobalt blue fading into a pale lower body and a light interior. Rinse it soon after use and dry it thoroughly before storage.
