Mangang Village Sheng Tai Sheng Pu-erh (March 2024): A Unique Artisan Tea Experience

This Sheng Pu-erh tea from Mangang Village, Yunnan Province, is a limited-production tea crafted during the Moychay March 2024 Yunnan Tea Expedition

Mangang Village is mostly inhabited by the Hani people, one of the minority ethnic groups of Yunnan. This tea was harvested from young tea trees and roasted in a pan by hand by skilled technicians, including Mr. Shahui from Jingmai Mountain, who were specifically invited for the project. This Sheng Pu-erh is considered a typical young tree Sheng from Mangang Village, offering a great energizing effect and a refreshing taste.

Description

Leaf Appearance and Aroma

  • Dry Leaves: Large and voluminous, with a strong citrus aroma of fresh orange, complemented by woody and rustic notes.
  • Heated Leaves: Develop more robust and smoky aromas.
  • Wet Leaves: Between infusions, the aroma intensifies, revealing layers of baked, toasted, and roasted chestnuts. The nuanced aroma is a testament to masterful production techniques, particularly during the shaqing (de-enzyming) stage.

Flavor Profile

  • Infusion:
    • Balance: Perfectly harmonized sweetness, bitterness, and acidity.
    • Consistency: Slightly thick yet soft, with a mildly watery texture that creates a smooth mouthfeel.
  • Aromas and Tastes:
    • Early infusions feature strong baked, roasted, and smoky notes, reminiscent of artisan roasted oolongs. Aromas of incense, ashy wood, and roasted chestnuts dominate.
    • A vibrant orange flavor—initially tasting like toasted orange or orange wood—gradually takes center stage in later infusions, transitioning to the refreshing taste of juicy, fresh orange.
    • The aftertaste is dynamic, with swirling aromas that expand and evolve, offering new layers of flavor with every sip.
