Jianshui pottery, also known as Jianshui Zitao, is a traditional folk handicraft from Jianshui County, Yunnan province, China. It is made from unique local clays in various colors, including red, yellow, purple, blue, and white, with a high iron content.
Jianshui pottery has a long history, evolving from celadon to blue and white ceramics, coarse ceramics, and eventually purple pottery. It is considered one of the four famous types of Chinese pottery and represents the traditional folk art of Jianshui County.
Jianshui teapots, made from Jian Shui clay, are renowned for their design, craftsmanship, and practicality in brewing teas. They are suitable for various teas, especially those that require higher brewing temperatures. Jianshui teapots are handmade on potter's wheels, and the forms are inspired by classic designs with unique interpretations.
Carving on wet clay and the application of different-colored clays are the main decoration techniques. The teapots are fired in modern kilns and then polished to a mirror finish using grinding stones and abrasive paste, distinguishing them from other styles.
