Gaiwan 96182 has a broad, fine rim and a raised foot, giving fingers room to hold the bowl while the lid guides leaves and pours. Its pale, speckled surface and darkened edges make wood-firing marks part of the tea table.
The gaiwan, meaning covered bowl, became established as a tea vessel during the Ming period. Its bowl and lid are used together in gongfu brewing, allowing tea to be steeped, strained by the lid, and poured into cups.
China's wood-fired ceramic tradition is known for surfaces altered by flame, ash and kiln atmosphere. Here, smoky grey, brown and blue-grey tones, fine speckling, and a darker foot show that firing character. Rinse, dry, and store the gaiwan with its lid separate.
