Golden Toad Gaiwan # 96151

This gaiwan has a broad flared rim, raised golden toad decoration, and a lid with a broad knob for controlled handling. Perforations around the inner lid help hold back tea leaves as liquor is poured, making it practical for gongfu brewing.

The gaiwan became an important Chinese tea vessel during the Ming period, when loose-leaf tea was steeped rather than whisked. Its lid, bowl, and saucer traditionally work together at the table, although this two-part design is used by holding the lid against the rim while pouring.

Made in China from dark clay, this piece combines a smooth ground with warm reddish-brown relief and carved cloud motifs. Rinse it promptly after use and leave the lid slightly open while the vessel dries.
