This gaiwan presents a broad flared rim, a shallow domed lid, and a sturdy raised foot, giving the brewer clear control while pouring. Its dark, earthy body is crossed by a lighter diagonal firing area, creating a strong visual focus at the tea table.
The gaiwan is a Chinese lidded bowl used for brewing and drinking tea, with its form established during the Ming period. During a gongfu tea session, the lid restrains the leaves while the bowl is tilted to direct the infusion into another vessel.
Made in China and wood-fired, the surface combines charcoal grey, olive, cream, and brown tones, with ash effects visible across the bowl and lid. Handle the lid by its knob, rinse promptly after brewing, and dry the pieces separately.
