Wood-Fired Gaiwan # 96187

The gaiwan pairs a wide, gently flared rim with a fitted lid and raised knob, giving the fingers room to control the lid while pouring. Its foot lifts the rounded bowl comfortably from the table.

Gaiwan means lidded bowl in Chinese and the form became established in the Ming period. Tea is brewed directly in the bowl, then the lid is tilted to hold leaves back as liquor is decanted or sipped.

This piece is made in China with a dark ceramic body and a wood-fired surface mottled by ash and flame across its brown-grey tones. Keep it dry between uses and rinse gently without abrasive cleaners.
