The chawan combines a generous rounded body with horizontal ridges and a slightly raised foot, giving the bowl a secure hold during whisking. Its broad opening makes it easy to work the whisk and observe the foam.
Chawan is Japanese for tea bowl and denotes the principal bowl used for matcha. The form belongs to the tea tradition of preparing powdered tea by whisking it directly in a wide bowl, with Chinese ceramics among its historical influences.
Made in China, this bowl displays a wood-fired surface of charcoal grey, silvery beige and rust-coloured bands. Ash and flame have created varied sheen across the ridges. Rinse softly after use and allow the bowl to dry before putting it away.
