"牡丹小西施" — literally "Peony Small Xishi" — refers to a small Xishi-style teapot decorated or themed with peony (牡丹) motifs. The Xishi (西施) shape is a classic Chinese teapot silhouette widely associated with Yixing (zisha) ware: its name evokes the famed beauty Xishi and has been used for centuries to describe a modest, elegant form prized for gongfu brewing. While individual attributions vary, the Xishi form became a staple among potters from the late Ming into the Qing and remains popular with contemporary makers for its balanced proportions and intimate capacity.

Shape note: the small Xishi is typically low and rounded with softly sloping shoulders, a compact body, a short spout and a simple, comfortably arced handle. Lids are close-fitting to preserve aroma; the modest size concentrates heat and extracts, making it ideal for single-person or two-cup gongfu sessions. The "peony" element signals decorative emphasis—either surface carving, applied relief, or painted motif—linking the piece to traditional symbols of prosperity and beauty.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
