Brief history: The Xishi (西施) teapot is a classic form in the Chinese teaware tradition, its name evoking the famed beauty Xishi and the graceful, balanced lines associated with her. This silhouette developed within the Yixing/Zisha pottery tradition and became a favorite among tea drinkers for its elegant simplicity and functional proportions. Variants of the Xishi shape have been made for centuries and were especially appreciated by collectors and gongfu tea practitioners.
Shape note: The Xishi form is typically low and rounded with a gently flattened profile, a short, well‑centered spout, small lid, and a compact handle—designed for good balance and one‑to‑two‑cup brewing. The term 窑变 indicates kiln‑induced color and surface variation produced during firing (wood‑firing, reduction/oxidation, ash interactions, etc.), so each “yaobian” finish will be unique and visually dynamic, prized for its natural, unpredictable effects.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
