Brief history: Since the late Ming and especially through the Qing dynasty, Chinese teapotmakers—most famously in Yixing—have produced vessels that imitate natural motifs and literati tastes (bamboo, leaves, shells, stones). Artisans often gave wares evocative names combining motif and shape. The association of “jade” evokes preciousness and a smooth, refined surface finish valued by collectors and tea drinkers.
Note about the shape: A “bamboo‑leaf flattened” teapot typically has a low, wide body with gentle, leaf‑inspired contours or ribs and a smooth or subtly polished exterior. This flattened profile creates a broad interior surface and a compact silhouette that emphasizes horizontality and tactile refinement. The form reads as both decorative and functional—balanced for pouring, visually rooted in natural imagery, and intended to showcase craft and surface texture.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
