Brief history: The shi‑piao is a traditional Yixing (Zisha) teapot shape that traces its roots to Ming and Qing dynasty pottery. Known for restrained, pebble‑like proportions and an emphasis on clay texture, piao forms became a staple in the Yixing canon and were refined by modern masters in the 20th century. Makers have long prized this shape for its balanced pouring and ability to concentrate tea aroma.
Shape note (from the photo): This example shows a low, gently rounded body with a short, slightly upward spout, a simple flat lid with a modest loop finial, and a circular handle—typical of the stone‑scoop aesthetic. The dark, unglazed purple‑brown clay and subtle surface variations highlight the material itself, making the pot both functional for gongfu brewing and visually understated.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
