Brief history: Knob‑finials modelled as animals have a long place in Chinese teapot and vessel decoration. From the Ming and especially Qing dynasties into the modern era, both porcelain and Yixing (zisha) clay teapots were often given figural lids — small lions, dogs, dragons, qilin and other auspicious creatures — as a decorative and symbolic touch. These motifs draw on folk belief and court tastes (protection, good fortune, status) rather than a single workshop, and they appear across different kilns and material types.
Shape note: A “beast‑knob” teapot typically combines a simple, functional body (globular, pear‑shaped, or flattened) with a carefully modelled lid whose central finial is the animal figure, serving as a practical handle and visual focal point. Proportions, modelling style and material (porcelain glaze vs. unglazed zisha) determine whether the piece reads as rustic, scholar’s object, or high‑status porcelain.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
