General historical context: shaped teapots for brewing and pouring became especially refined in China from the late Ming into the Qing dynasty, with regional centers such as Yixing producing many inventive forms in zisha (purple clay) and other bodies. Over centuries potters experimented with body profile, spout geometry and balance to improve pouring, drip control and aesthetic harmony; named forms often derive from these functional and poetic concerns.
Shape and function note: a horizontal, low-profile body paired with a bent spout gives a steady, controlled stream and helps prevent dripping when the pot is tilted. Visually, the curved spout creates a pleasing line that connects lid, body and handle; ergonomically it can shorten the pour arc and improve balance, especially for small-session brewing typical of Chinese gongfu practice. Materials may vary (zisha, porcelain, stoneware) depending on maker and period.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
