Brief history: The teapot tradition that produced named forms like this grew from Jiangsu’s Yixing and other 17th–19th century studio workshops where potters adapted classical motifs and archaeological shapes into functional teawares. Craftspeople often borrowed names from historical objects (weights, boxes, gourds) to describe silhouettes; those names remained in use while exact proportions varied by maker. Such forms reflect the Qing/Ming interest in antiquarian aesthetics and the close relationship between ceramic craft and scholar tastes.
Shape note: Expect a compact, horizontally balanced body, a short, well‑centered spout, a snug lid and a loop or C‑shaped handle — all arranged to suggest the solidity and symmetry of a weight. The light yellow surface gives a gentle, warm appearance and would suit gongfu brewing of oolong or black teas; like many traditional clays, it will mellow with use.
Wood-fired handmade Yixing teapot made from Duanni clay sourced from the original Huanglongshan mine. Xu Shun Wei.
